In the red corner is Google, 23 years old and your most trusted search engine for information. In the blue corner is Facebook, 17 years old and dominant player in the social network scene. Google has Maps and YouTube going strong while Facebook after acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp is the boss of social networks. Facebook is familiar and popular as the first choice for brand owners to reach out for new customers. But is it wise to ignore Google.
Why is Google special
Google Search is the umbrella product of Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Photos, Drive, Docs, Calendar, News and the list goes on. The dominant feature you will find is a search box. So anything you put on a Google product can appear in Google search. But Google is still not a social network. Infact it is everything other than a social networking platform. Each google product which is free has a paid promotion option integrated. Google search is the right option to target any audience.
Android is the game changer for google
While Google Search was increasing leaps and bounds, their engineers were quietly creating Android which was launched in 2008. It was only Google which knew there will be a shift of people from laptops and computers to relatively inexpensive smart phone handsets. Google was ready with an impressive list like maps and youtube.
Today an android handset in the hand of citizen means that they will use Google Search to look for anything. Anyone hunting for information, chances are they will ask google. The other part of the chance is that peoples still post queries in Facebook Groups asking for recommendations on almost everything. The only other competitor, the iPhone is more of a utility device.
Google My Business
So what happens if you are present on Google. There are three Google products to look out for. Blogger by Google which is a basic blogging platform, Google My Business and YouTube. So if you have a brand presence on these platforms your content will start showing in Google search results. Even if you are not on YouTube or Blogger, just a Google Maps entry should be enough. You can post pictures, videos, posters, offers and product details on Google Maps. Read about it here.
Let Google find you
There is a delicate balance between how much will you invest in product improvement and production and marketing. Google gives you the ability to invest little in content creation and gain a lot from it. You will need a way to build up your presence on Google and let Google do the rest for you.
